Zollikerberg Hospital

The Company

Zollikerberg Hospital is one of the leading providers of primary medical care in the greater Zurich area. As a private acute-care hospital with a public service mandate, it treats approximately 11,000 inpatients and over 60,000 outpatients annually. With approximately 1,100 employees and 174 beds, it makes a substantial contribution to the canton’s healthcare system.

Its roots date back to 1858, when the “Neumünster Hospital and Deaconess Institute” was founded on Hegibachplatz in Zurich. In 1933, the institution moved to its current location. Today, the hospital is operated by the Diakoniewerk Neumünster Foundation.

The hospital has made targeted investments in radiology in recent years. In 2021, a new wing opened that houses, among other things, the diagnostic and interventional radiology departments. The purchase of a new Philips CT scanner is part of this modernization effort.

The Starting Point

The purchase of a new CT scanner was a carefully planned project for the hospital, with no time pressure and no immediate bottlenecks. The previous machine needed to be replaced, and the timeline allowed for a thorough evaluation. For the CFO, two strategic objectives were paramount: preserving liquidity and diversifying the financing structure rather than relying on a single source. Various financing models were evaluated accordingly.

The central question

When making a carefully planned major investment, how do you choose the right financing option if time and options aren’t a constraint?

Off to Zollikerberg: Würth Leasing on Site

The initial contact was made through the field sales team, in collaboration with the radiology department. A foundation of trust already existed between the hospital and our leasing team based on previous collaboration. This made getting started easier: an on-site meeting, an open discussion of the requirements, and a joint review of the options. Short communication channels, clear terms, and a solution tailored to the company’s needs. Especially when there’s time to carefully compare options.

The Solution from Würth Leasing

After evaluating various financing models, the hospital opted for a finance lease with Würth Leasing. The deciding factor was the combination of attractive terms and a partnership based on mutual respect.

84 months

Duration

The Philips CT scanner was financed through a traditional finance lease with a term of 84 months. This means the financing aligns precisely with the equipment’s useful life, and the costs are spread evenly over its entire operational period.

Computed Tomography

Three points were crucial to the solution:

Preserve liquidity

The investment is made without tying up equity.

Diversify Financing

Leasing complements existing sources of financing and makes the structure more robust.

Ensure Predictability

Fixed rates throughout the entire term, transparent terms and conditions.

The result

Zollikerberg Hospital was able to purchase the new CT scanner without tying up its own capital. The radiology department is now equipped with state-of-the-art technology and continues to contribute to the reliability of healthcare services in the greater Zurich area. The hospital has retained the flexibility to make further investments.

The Collaboration

What is remarkable about this case is not so much the speed as the quality of the collaboration: personal contact, direct communication, and clear terms. From the hospital’s perspective, Würth Leasing was not a chance discovery, but a deliberate choice among several equally viable options.

Patric Bernet, CFO, Zollikerberg Hospital

“Würth Leasing’s straightforward and constructive approach won me over. Working with Mr. Vaneria was a supportive and respectful experience. I can definitely see myself pursuing additional financing solutions with Würth Leasing in the future.”
